1、Independence, The Key to a Strong and Smooth Transition Between Pre-Prep and Prep School
Among the many important skills children need before entering Prep school, independence stands out as the most crucial.
In K2, pupils begin acquiring basic self-care skills: turning clothes the right way out, putting on socks, and distinguishing between left and right shoes. These seemingly simple tasks help them build confidence through trial and repetition. By K3, they progress to more complex activities like changing clothes, showering, and even using a hair dryer safely. While teachers always remain close by to support and guide pupils are increasingly encouraged to take personal responsibility for their routines.
In the classroom, daily routines provide regular opportunities to develop independence and leadership. For example, roles like "Water Monitor" encourage pupils to manage their own water intake while also supporting others by reminding them to stay hydrated. Pupils gradually transition from relying on parents for school preparations to independently checking their own supplies against personalised checklists. When challenges arise, teachers lead reflective class discussions to encourage pupils to think critically and to solve problems collaboratively.
Our weekly "Star of the Week" award is a powerful reflection of just how far they have come. Instead of simply voting for their friends, children now articulate thoughtful reasons such as, "I should be the star of the week because I have shown all the Malvern Qualities this week." This evolution perfectly captures the essence of independence as children develop self-awareness and self-management skills and show clear signs that they are ready to take their next steps into Prep School with confidence.
2、An Emotional Journey of Growth in a Forest School
Forest School transforms the outdoors into a living classroom where children learn through hands-on exploration. The rustling of leaves, the feel of damp soil and the rough texture of pinecones spark curiosity and invite exploration. Observing insects and collecting foliage develops focus and observation skills, while team games and nature-inspired crafts further foster collaboration and creativity.
During Wellbeing Month, pupils took part in a range of unique activities designed to help them understand and express their emotions. During "Emotion Magic Week", pupils played games such as "Joy Circle" and "Anger Release" to help them understand feelings. They each created their own "Emotion Magic Bag" decorated with coloured strings and natural materials to express their moods. On "Calm Forest Day" pupils practiced emotional regulation through sensory experiences like touching pinecones, listening to the rustle of leaves and grounding themselves in tree yoga.
Each emotion bag, and each grassy footprint told the same story, that in nature's embrace, every child can find the space to blossom in their own unique way.
