Junior WSD秋季已备辩题 I

本次的两个已备动议

分别涉及到了大家非常感兴趣的科技领域

以及法律&政治领域

期待大家在辩论中为我们带来崭新视角！

Proposition 正方

For the proposition, the teams can argue that the fast-paced trajectory of AI development has caused significant harm. The trend today is defined by profit, automation, and corporate domination at the expense of ethics and the common good. This widens economic inequality as AI poses a threat to millions of workers, resulting in large-scale unemployment and social unrest.

Teams could highlight that AI systems tend to reinforce biases due to biased training data, compromising fairness across sectors such as hiring, law enforcement, and lending. Privacy is eroded as AI is increasingly used for surveillance, facial recognition, and data mining. Teams can further argue that there is a lack of regulation and accountability in AI development, resulting in possible misuse in areas such as military weapons, disinformation campaigns, and social manipulation. Overall, the direction of AI development prioritizes technological advancement over human safety and ethical responsibility.

Opposition 反方

For the opposition, teams should argue that that AI development, even at its current stage, promises enormous benefits that far outweigh its harms. AI increases productivity, opens new industries, and offers medical breakthroughs (e.g. cancer diagnosis), helps to combat climate change, provides accessibility for the disabled, and enhances education. While they might be risks, these are inherently built into every revolutionary technology and may be mitigated with proper governance and regulation instead of stalling advancement.

Opps can also argue that AI is a tool, and responsibility lies with humans, not the technology itself. Restricting or regretting its development will disrupt innovation, economic growth, and global competitiveness. The existing trend of AI also democratizes knowledge and services (e.g., translation, tutoring, and medical diagnostics) access, opening up opportunities that previously did not exist. To abandon this trend risks slowing down solutions to numerous worldwide problems and, to some extent, deepens inequality between nations that embrace AI and those that do not.

Proposition 正方

For the proposition, an argument can be made that welfare assistance to illegal immigrants directly encourages illegal immigration, which puts further strain on public resources and services. withholding welfare support, countries can discourage illegal immigration and promote legal migration efforts. Prop teams can also argue that welfare programs should be reserved for citizens and legal residents who pay taxes framing it as a matter of justice and a prudent utilization of resources.

Another argument is that the provision of welfare can overwhelm social safety nets, particularly in nations already facing crises such as housing shortages, medical shortages, or high unemployment. Restricting benefits to legal residents serves to ensure government expenditures are funneled towards those who contribute to the system formally and strengthens national security by preventing unregulated migration flows.

Opposition 反方

For the opposition, teams should argue that denying welfare to illegal immigrants is immoral and counterproductive. To withhold medical treatment, housing, or food stamps only increases human misery, resulting in public health crises and increased social unrest. Most illegal aliens already contribute economically to the country through labor and taxes (e.g. sales tax), so denying them welfare is unjust.

Opposition sides can also contend that not having welfare has indirect costs to governments, e.g. higher emergency healthcare costs, increased crime rates due to desperation, and lower productivity from untreated illnesses. Providing basic support also strengthens integration, public safety, and labor stability. Instead of punishing the vulnerable populations, the governments can focus on immigration reform and pathways to legal status, preserving humane treatment while maintaining social order at the same time.
